Well I guess I should not be surprised by the actions of Bush and McCain anymore but somehow they manage to surprise me still.
So Bush has once again broken the rules and dared to go where no president has gone before, and McCain has jumped on the bandwagon.
Bush was speaking to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on the celebratory occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel. Bush used his speech at this occasion to make a political attack on his political enemies back in the US.
Now first of all, that is simply not done. When our politicians are over seas they do not bad mouth other members of our government. Irony number one: bush called himself the "uniter" and proves to be the most divisive politician in history with actions like this.
Second of all the attack he levied was despicable and ironic to the Nth degree. He said that meeting with Iran would be appeasing them making them equivalent with those who appeased the Nazi's. Now this is productive! Telling a country that is our ally that our possible next president is akin to their greatest enemy. Who's side is Bush on? Only his own.
Now for the Irony!!!! First off, the day before he made this statement, his own secretary of defense Robert Gates said we need to talk with Iran! I guess he is an appeaser. Condi Rice said the same thing. The Bush administration has talked with other enemies such as North Korea and Syria. And of course all presidents in our history have done so as well. JFK and Reagan talked with the Soviets, Nixon talked with China, ... How do you avoid or end wars without talking with your enemies?
Now McCain is proving to be such a moron when it comes to his "strong" suit of foreign affairs. (see my "McCain rides the double talk express" blog). He jumped on this issue, saying he will use this against Obama. He went on to say how the fact that he is willing to talk with Iran shows how naive Obama is and how he is clueless and inexperienced when it comes to foreign policy. WHAT?
Let us just look at someone we would all agree is NOT naive or inexperienced when it comes to foreign affairs, James Baker, pappy Bush's Secretary of State. He wrote a book called "The Politics of DIPLOMACY" !!!! He also came out after W. Bush's remarks in Israel and said that talking with Iran is NOT appeasement and is necessary!
Sorry McCain, you jumped on the wrong bandwagon and once again proved YOU are the one who has problems with foreign affairs. What was your comment on Iran? oh yeah, you sang a song "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb...Bomb, Bomb Iran". You are sick!
In the same interview with James Baker he talked about how he made 16 diplomatic missions to Syria (then on the list of state sponsors of terrorism) before they agreed to sit down and talk with their enemy Israel, which is what Israel wanted at the time.
Enter yet another Irony. The day after Bush left Israel after making these comments Israel met with their enemy - Syria. Was he calling the Israel's appeasers? And where did Bush go? He went to meet with his FAMILY FRIENDS in Saudi Arabia. Friends with Saudi Arabia, we give them billions in modern weapons, and yet we can't talk with Iran. And where did the 9/11 hijackers come from? What country is supporting Sunni Militias like Al Qaida in Iraq? That is right, Saudi Arabia.
And for the final Irony in this story I will point out. Bush compared those like Obama who want to talk with Iran with Nazi Appeasers. Now I know Bush is not a history scholar but surely he must know that his family fortune was built by his grandfather Prescott Bush (US Senator) by dealing with the NAZIS! Grampy Bush built his fortune when companies which he directed worked closely with those who financed the Nazi's. In fact Bush keep doing business with them even AFTER WE WENT TO WAR WITH THEM. Until, that is, his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act.
Of course the Bush family have made going into business with questionable foreign powers a family tradition.
Just as McCain's advisers make money working for the military junta in Burma and for the Saudis as well. They are all international criminals, the whole neo-con wing of the republican party!
